Our Scholars in Unsafe Buildings: Why Child Safey Must Become a National Priority

The Kahna, Lahore teaching-centre tragedy, which resulted in the loss of precious lives, is not the first time such an incident has occurred. In fact, there have been countless other — and now forgotten — incidents that have caused deaths and serious injuries among our young scholars.
Here, researcher and IFE founder Zeeba T. Hashmi discusses a brief dataset she compiled from incidents reported in mainstream media. Such tragedies recur across Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Sindh. However, because the figures cited in the video are drawn only from reported media incidents, this should not be taken to mean that other areas are free of the same risk.

There has been an abject failure on the part of the state to mount concerted, coordinated efforts to ensure that all buildings — especially those where children learn — are safe, whether the institutions are public, private, or run by welfare organisations. Civic awareness among parents and caregivers is also lacking.

In this video message, the IFE team further calls upon human rights organisations to ensure that proper data is maintained under a dedicated "School Safety" category, as this is a matter of prime concern for children.
