The Nomadic, Mobile or Peripatetic People: Recognition and Gaps of Understanding in Rights Framework

As part of its Summer Experience Programme, Ibtidah for Education (IFE) mentors young writers, budding journalists and researchers as they investigate assigned topics in depth. In this episode, Ayan Qamar — an A-Level science student — shares the summarised findings of his desk research and literature review on the challenges facing nomadic, mobile, and peripatetic communities in Pakistan.

While Ayan develops his full research article for IFE, this conversation distils his early findings: how these communities organise themselves politically, the coping social mechanisms they have devised, and the prospects they see in education. He also examines the barriers that keep nomadic and pastoralist communities from reaching basic services and facilities, challenges they face of discrimination and draws on global practice to ask what Pakistan might learn — including how the governments of India, Mongolia and Kyrgyzstan have worked to support and accommodate their own nomadic populations.

His analysis draws on a diverse range of literature and sources, reflecting the research-driven approach at the heart of IFE's mentorship.
