Why Education Needs Provincial Autonomy
In this 2022 press conference in Quetta, Zeeba T. Hashmi discusses why devolution and provincial autonomy are essential to making education responsive to the realities of different regions and communities. Drawing on her observations from Balochistan, she questions the logic of a highly centralised and uniform education system, arguing that curriculum, teaching and educational policy must take into account local social, cultural and regional contexts.
The central message is that education cannot be governed through a one-size-fits-all approach; greater provincial and local ownership is necessary for a more responsive and democratic education system.
This is based on her initial findings on Single National Curriculum from 2022.
