Freedom of Expression and Journalism: Safety, Reporting and the Right to Speak

Freedom of expression is fundamental to journalism, but the ability to report freely is closely connected to the safety and security of journalists.

In this talk, Zeeba T. Hashmi reflects on the pressures that journalists can face in exercising their right to report and express themselves, including fear, censorship, editorial policies and pressure on families. The discussion also touches upon reporting on sensitive issues, and the international mechanisms established to monitor grave violations.

A key concern raised is the transparency and inclusiveness of these mechanisms: who is consulted, how reporting systems function, and whether journalists, civil society and other relevant stakeholders have meaningful opportunities to participate in the process.

The talk ultimately asks an important question: How can freedom of expression and responsible journalism be protected when those reporting difficult and sensitive stories themselves face pressure and insecurity?
