Why Democratize Education in Pakistan: talk by Zeeba T. Hashmi

In this TEDx talk, Zeeba Hashmi reflects on the deep inequalities embedded in Pakistan’s education system and asks whether education can truly serve democracy when access to knowledge, freedom of thought and opportunities remain unequal.

Drawing on her experience of working with children excluded from conventional schooling, she shares a powerful encounter with a ten-year-old child that made her reflect on how poverty, discrimination and social attitudes can disempower children from an early age.

The talk goes beyond access to schools. It examines educational barriers, discrimination, poverty, minority communities, textbook content, hate speech, academic freedom, freedom of expression, centralization of education, and the marginalization of ethnic and nomadic communities.

Zeeba also discusses the experiences of Pakistan’s Bakarwal community and how conventional education policies often fail communities whose lifestyles and educational needs do not fit a standardized system.

At the heart of the talk is a larger question: Can democracy flourish without a liberated education system?

The talk argues for an education system that is inclusive, responsive to diverse communities, free from indoctrination, and capable of nurturing critical and rational thought.

Liberated education can be a fundamental pillar of democracy — and of our democratic struggles.
